Mental Health Reminders for the Stressed PR Student

Writer: Maria CaballeroMaria Caballero

Now that we have reached the month of April, we are all in the final home stretch of the spring semester. This time can be mentally and physically challenging for all students, especially with final exams, projects and end of year events quickly wrapping up. During this time, it is important to take a step back and acknowledge your overall health and wellbeing.

Being a student in the CJC can be difficult as it seems everyone is hustling for the next big opportunity or resume booster. It is already hard for students to juggle rigorous academics and extracurriculars, let alone with the additional stress of applying to jobs and internships. Before focusing on any other commitments, we need to care for our own mental health. Here are mental health reminders for the stressed PR student or anyone who may need additional support this season.

1. Stop comparing yourself to others

At a school like UF, it is so easy to feel obligated to get involved in as many things as possible. As you scroll through LinkedIn, seeing other students’ amazing accomplishments can easily make you feel like you are not doing enough. Hearing about the involvement of other students can make you feel like your stress is not valid because you don’t have as much on your plate. You have to remember: We are all UF students, and we all have our own strengths and weaknesses. Your accomplishments and hard work are just as meaningful as anyone else’s. Also, just because someone appears to be balancing their time well, they may actually feel the exact same way as you. Instead of comparing yourself to others, be proud of your own achievements and be happy for your peers’ accomplishments.

2. Don’t neglect your physical wellbeing

If you feel your commitments are preventing you from taking care of your body, you need to take a step back and prioritize your physical wellbeing. Make sure you are getting enough sleep, drinking enough water and spending some time away from your work to clear your head. Exercising for at least 30 minutes each day can help ease your mind, as well as practicing meditation or deep breathing. If you aren’t feeling well, make sure to rest your body so that you don’t get sick.

3. Talk to friends and family

Sometimes, talking out your feelings can help relieve some of your stress. It is so important to spend time with loved ones, especially if you are in a negative headspace. Even if you don’t want to talk about your feelings, it can improve your overall mental health to be surrounded by people who bring joy to your life.  If you recharge better by taking some time to be alone, that is just as valid and necessary. The most important thing is to listen to your mind and body and understand what you need most. If you are a more introverted person, talk through your stress with friends and family, but also take some time to yourself.

4. Appreciate yourself

You have made it to the end of the school year! Take a moment to step back and appreciate your accomplishments, even the small victories. College isn’t easy, but you are doing it! You don’t always have to be perfect. This time in your life is about learning who you are, including your strengths and weaknesses. Mistakes are a part of life, and they help you learn valuable lessons and become a better person.

If you are feeling as though your mental health is suffering, it can ease your mind to reflect on these reminders to take care of yourself. Summer is almost here, so let’s finish this semester with a positive outlook!
