Like peanut butter and jelly, macaroni and cheese and a J-School student and his or her AP Stylebook, some things are just better together. This February, PRSSA and Alpha PRoductions joined forces to offer members and CJC students alike professional development advice by posting about various topics on the organizations’ respective social media platforms.
During the past four weeks, both organizations got #ReadytoPRo, working together to encourage students to take charge of their post-academic interests. If you missed some of the posts, do not worry, because these are the main suggestions from the month.
Resume
Only use one page.
Ensure information is relevant to the position you are applying for.
Use bullet points.
Utilize action verbs to show accomplishments.
Cover letter
Keep it short.
Check out some examples before writing your own.
Do not repeat your CV.
Write a new letter for each company.
Keep your profile updated.
Connect with people you know.
Engage by commenting and linking posts.
Join groups that interest you.
Message people you admire to create meaningful connections.
Portfolios
Include pieces that have been published, if applicable.
Choose different types of writing to show versatility.
Use writing samples that highlight your style and voice.
Interview tips
Research and make sure to familiarize yourself with any ongoing projects.
Review your resume and be prepared to talk about your past experience.
Prepare questions that show interest.
How to deal with rejection or negotiate an offer
Do not dwell on where you went wrong.
Do not give up on the job search process.
Acknowledge your feelings and learn from the experience.
Ask for ways you can improve to become a stronger candidate.
Negotiation isn’t just about pay. You can also negotiate benefits, time-off and professional development stipends.
