Professional Development Outside the CJC

Fall semester is coming to a close, which may lead students to look forward to new involvement opportunities for the Spring 2022 semester. In addition to immersion experiences through the University of Florida’s College of Journalism and Communications, other on-campus organizations offer involvement opportunities that allow CJC students to apply their major-focused studies. Spring is a fresh start for students and a great time to reflect on academic and professional development goals students wish to accomplish.

Strengthen your skills by writing for a publication

Strike Magazine, The Independent Florida Alligator, Her Campus UFL and Rowdy Magazine are some of the student-run publications that give students a glimpse into the world of newspaper and magazine storytelling. Participation in these independent publications allow students to grow their research, copywriting and editing skills. Associated Press Style is a fundamental piece of coursework taught in all CJC majors, and writing for these publications can further students’ abilities. Whether you are a prospective journalist or just a student with a passion for creative writing, you can showcase your abilities through a variety of different media outlets. 

Connect with the community

Students involved in Dance Marathon at UF can apply to be on captain teams such as Public Relations, Multimedia and Community Outreach. I am currently a member of the Public Relations Captain Team for the 2021 to 2022 school year. Through this organization, I have had the opportunity to combine my passion for PR with my drive to help combat childhood illness at UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital. My team and I help run the DM at UF Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Blog and website, as well as assist with the social media of the individual captain teams. I have learned and strengthened essential PR skills such as consistent branding, professional communication, content creation, time management and a variety of other techniques that have made me a stronger student and fundraiser. 

Get political experience early on in your academic career

For students who are interested in political public relations, becoming a part of student government is a great opportunity to learn professional communication and leadership skills. In preparation for SGA roles, students can get involved in PICSA (Public Interest Communications Student Association) as well as enroll in classes such as PUR4442 (Public Interest Communications) and PUR 4932 (Political Communications). 

It is important for students to be well rounded and implement their classwork in organizations across campus. Of course, students can also get involved by joining clubs in the CJC. Some professional development opportunities include the Public Relations Student Society of America, Alpha PRoductions, The Agency, National Broadcasting Society, Society of Professional Journalists and a variety of others.
